Orange County in California boasts many pleasant towns and suburbs and all blessed with sunshine. Anaheim California is an attractive but active city, close to Los Angeles. It was settled by farm worker families from Bavaria, Germany in 1857 and has thrived ever since, blending agriculture, modern industry and tourism into its economic mix. The last census, conducted in 2000 gave the population as over 300,000.
The city became an important industrial location for electronics and parts for aircraft. It’s also involved in canning fruit. The main crops grown in the area are lemons, walnuts and oranges. There is a local airport, bearing the grand name of John Wayne Airport. There is a shameful period in the history of Anaheim California, when the infamous Ku Klux Klan had a stranglehold there, electing members as town officials and police officers. This infiltration took place in the 1920’s, before being swept away.
Walt Disney chose to build his first theme park in the city. Disneyland opened in 1955 and it has brought millions of tourists to the area. This has made Anaheim California a familiar name across the world and it has a twin sister town in Japan and one in Spain.
Sport is also important to the residents. A very impressive venue called Angel Stadium is the home ground of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim baseball team. The Honda Center, which is an indoor arena, is host to the NHL Anaheim Ducks hockey team. Wrestling and basketball matches are also held here. The center is large enough to put on concerts too and has received many pop stars, including Paul McCartney, Barry Manilow, Madonna and the Rolling Stones.
Every large business community wants to attract the convention organizers, and Anaheim Convention Center is a prestigious building with top facilities. It’s the largest convention venue for the entire West Coast area. There is a large ballroom, exhibition spaces and meeting rooms. The catering is excellent and it’s possible to have themed banquets for guests.
The city has a successful balance between work and play and people are very happy to live here. It has not forgotten its roots and remains a center for agriculture but has looked forward too, to be a modern 21st century city. Anaheim California can claim several successful people as sons and daughters of their soil. They include Gwen Stefani (vocalist from No Doubt), the late singer songwriter Jeff Buckley and the late professional wrestler Mike Lockwood.
