Nicknamed Space City, USA, the county seat of Brevard County, Titusville, Florida is a growing resort and particularly popular with space tourists. The city owes much of its economic success to its close proximity to the Kennedy Space Center, opened in the 1950’s and it has other interesting attractions too. It has been receiving a steady flow of visitors since 1892 when the railroad expanded and the city opened a station.
The Space Center contains a visitor’s center for the public to gain an insight into the world of NASA and it’s personnel. The US Astronaut Hall of Fame has exhibits and memorabilia of the astronauts and people can have a go on a flight simulator and a thrilling G-Force trainer. The US Space Walk of Fame Museum displays models of spacecraft and launch controls in addition to collectibles and clothing used in space exploration.
The North Brevard Historical Museum is dedicated to the local history of Titusville, Florida and the surrounding county. There are artifacts and photographs, Seminole Indian exhibits, a reference library and a collection of ladies’ clothing from the beginning of the twentieth century. Aviation history is the subject of the Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum, which displays military aircraft, dating from WWI to the present time.
There was great excitement in the community in 1982 in Titusville, Florida when an important archeological site was discovered at nearby Windover. Remains from 160 adult males, females and children were found at the bottom of a pond. The skeletons, going back to the archaic period, were well preserved because they had been put into peat ground. Various artifacts were also found, such as animal bones, shells, clothing, blankets and bags.
The area has honored law enforcement officers by opening the American Police Hall of Fame and Museum, the first national museum of it’s kind in the country. Visitors can take a short helicopter ride over the Titusville, Florida region or have a go on a target gun range. There is a memorial in tribute to officers killed in the line of duty, including a special 9/11 memorial tribute.
The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area for animals, fish and birds on land owned by NASA. There are different types of terrain, including saltwater estuaries, scrub and dunes to support the wildlife, some of which is endangered, and plants. Birds include osprey and bald eagle and the animals and marine life include sea turtles, American Alligator, manatees and salamander. This is an important facility for Titusville, Florida and the surrounding area.
