Every summer, crowds of American tourists descend on the Massachusetts resort of Cape Cod. The peninsula has an abundance of great beaches and the temperate climate makes for a long season. Many people take a Cape Cod vacation to indulge their particular hobby or just to relax. It’s famous for it’s antique shops, ice cream parlors and its many seafood restaurants. Visitors going by air usually arrive at Logan International airport in Boston or T.F.Greene Airport near Providence, Rhode Island. There is a wide range of accommodation available from luxury hotels to inexpensive bed and breakfast lodgings. Some tourists visit in late spring or early fall, when prices are cheaper.
There is plenty to do and see here. Bobbing round on a sailboat is a great way to see the coastline and water sports devotees are well catered for. There are scenic paths to hike through or you can rent a bike and go bike trailing. It’s a favorite spot for freshwater and sea fishing and there are numerous first class golf courses. There are also miniature golf and go karting circuits. A Cape Cod vacation would not be the same without a visit to a lighthouse. There are several working lighthouses and they are so associated with this strip of coast. Severe storms do blow up from time to time and many a sailor is glad for them.
The Cape Cod National Seashore is a popular tourist attraction, with six swim friendly beaches, sand dunes and freshwater ponds to explore. There are also eleven nature trails. Provincetown is the center to book a whale watching trip. It’s almost a certainty that a whale will be sighted during a Cape Cod vacation and it will probably be a humpback, sei or finback whale.
There are many pretty towns and scenic spots on the island. Barnstable town and surrounding villages have lovely harbors and beaches. Hyannis village has a John F. Kennedy Memorial tribute, the Kennedy family having vacationed on nearby Martha’s Vineyard for many years. There is also the theatre in the round here, called Cape Cod Melody Tent. Dennis is the town known as the cultural area for a Cape Cod vacation, with its many craft shops and the Cape Cod Museum of Art. There is also summer theatre at the Cape Playhouse and an arts festival. Wellfleet is also worth a visit, particularly for Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, which organizes cruises, tours, bird walks and lectures. The local attraction, Uncle Tim’s Bridge is beloved of artists and photographers and has hiking trails round the salt marsh.
