The Yakima Valley is an important agricultural center, considered to be one of the best areas in the world for the production of apples. The area is also a major growing region for hops, peaches, pears, cherries and vegetables such as corn, beans and peppers. Yakima, Washington lies in the heart of this fertile valley and is the county seat for Yakima County.
In recent years, the area has also flourished in the wine industry. There are over 40 wineries doing good business and it’s said that the soil in the Valley is similar to that found in France. The local hops grown support a growing interest in beer, celebrated at the annual Fresh Hop Ale Festival. A number of microbreweries set up displays at the festival and there is live music and vendors selling local beer, wine and food. A homebrew contest has been added, giving everyone the chance to get involved.
The Yakima River provides water for the city and is a favorite spot for fishing and recreational activities. There is a 10 mile trail for walking or cycling, a park and a preservation area for wildlife on the banks of the river. Several small lakes, situated to the north of the city, receive many visitors in summer who come to swim or fish. Visitors to Yakima, Washington can come in to the local airport at McAllister Field from Salt Lake City and Seattle.
There is plenty for tourists to do here and they are given a warm welcome. It’s fun to move around the town on one of a pair of old trolley buses that operate during summer on a 5 mile track. The calendar of activities is always full and there are several annual events. The Yakima Folklife Festival has a medieval village and arts and crafts stalls, food, children’s games, live music and dance. There’s more music at the Gapsody Music festival at Union Gap. Bringing your own lawn chairs or blankets is advised.
The Antique Car Show is another popular draw in Yakima, especially for fans of customized trucks, rod cars and roadsters. Art and wine come together at the Art Walk and Wine Gala. Artists from across the state display their work and local wineries also exhibit their produce. All this is accompanied by live jazz music. Entrance is by ticket and only given to people over 21 years of age. Music lovers enjoy regular free concerts performed by the Yakima Washington Valley Community Band.
